BACK OF THE HOUSE OPERATIONS

A perspective on hospitality

The Vision Behind the House

Seeing What Others May Overlook.

After more than 25 years working in hospitality operations, I have learned that the guest experience begins long before a guest notices the work. It starts with the people, preparation, standards, and details behind the scenes.

First impressions are lasting impressions

People notice how a place feels. They notice cleanliness, organization, the condition of public spaces, and whether the environment seems cared for. Not everyone will explain what disappointed them. Sometimes they simply choose not to return. That is why I believe we have to see what others may overlook.

Stewarding supports the entire operation

Stewarding is more than washing dishes or maintaining equipment. It supports the kitchen, food service, sanitation, safety, and the teams that depend on those functions every day. When stewarding is organized and properly supported, the rest of the operation can do its job better.

Housekeeping should feel better than home

A guest should walk into a room and feel comfortable, confident, and welcome. The difference is often in the small details: the presentation, consistency, care, and the pride taken in a job well done.

Public areas set the atmosphere

Entrances, hallways, restrooms, and shared spaces create an impression before a guest reaches their destination. These spaces deserve attention throughout the day, not only when someone points out a problem.

Leadership means helping people improve

Good operations depend on good people. I believe in setting clear expectations, providing the right tools, listening to employees, and teaching rather than simply criticizing. When employees understand the reason behind a standard, they are better prepared to uphold it.

This is the vision behind Back of the House Operations: take pride in what people see, pay attention to what they do not see, and never forget the people doing the work.
